Smile Design

Smile design is not a single procedure but a planning process in which your smile is considered as a whole, both aesthetically and functionally. The colour, shape and alignment of the teeth are assessed together with your facial features, lips and gums.

What is it?

Planning looks at the facial midline, lip movement, how much tooth and gum show when you smile, and the proportions of the teeth to one another. The aim is a smile that looks natural and suits your face.

Where appropriate, treatments such as porcelain veneers, zirconia crowns or gum contouring are planned together. Which treatments are suitable is decided with your dentist, based on your oral health and your expectations.

The plan is made together with you: the shape, length and proportions of the teeth are discussed before treatment begins, and the suitable options and your expectations are considered together.

The process

  1. Examination and your expectations

Your oral and dental health is examined, and what you would like from your smile is discussed in detail.

  2. Analysis

Facial, lip, gum and tooth proportions are assessed, and the records needed for planning are taken.

  3. Planning

The shape, length and alignment of the teeth are planned together with you, and the suitable treatment options are explained.

  4. Trial smile (mock-up)

The planned changes are tried on your teeth in a temporary material. This trial lets you and your dentist evaluate the shape and proportions in the mouth and make changes if needed.

  5. Carrying out the treatment

The treatments are carried out in order according to the agreed plan and followed up at later check-ups.

Who is it for?

  • People unhappy with the colour, shape or length of their teeth
  • People with gaps, chips or worn teeth
  • People who feel their gums look uneven when they smile
  • People who want several aesthetic treatments within a single plan
  • Patients whose teeth and gums are healthy enough for aesthetic treatment

Frequently asked questions

Which treatments does smile design include?

This varies from person to person. Porcelain veneers, zirconia crowns and gum contouring may be planned on their own or in combination.

How long does smile design take?

It depends on the type and number of treatments planned. Plans with veneers or zirconia usually need several appointments; the expected duration is shared with you after the examination and planning.

Will my teeth need to be reshaped?

It depends on the treatment chosen. Veneers and zirconia require different degrees of preparation. The options and the preparation involved are explained in detail at the examination.

Is smile design suitable for everyone?

Health problems such as decay and gum disease need to be treated first. Aesthetic planning is built on a healthy mouth, and suitability is assessed at the examination.
